Proximity sensors can work on several principles including electromagnetic flux, ultrasonic echo and interrupted beams but the most versatile are devices that incorporate an infrared emitter and receiver on the same integrated circuit component. An important advantage of infrared detectors over inductance detectors is that the target can be made of virtually any material whereas inductance detectors require a conductor such as metal.
