There are two main types of position sensors. The reed switch senses when a metal object e.g. a piston head passes the unit. The switch closes giving a voltage signal. The signal generator is solid state and relies on a permanent magnet passing a sensor to ascertain the position of the piston or moving assembly. Reed switches have an operating voltage of 24 VDC or 100 VAC with a maximum load current of 40 mA and 20 mA respectively. Signal generators can operate on 5, 12 and 24 VDC with a maximum load of 80 mA, dependent on the cylinder specification. Securing the position sensors is done via a mounting kit that is specific to the cylinder type and can be ordered separately. A full selection of cable terminations, plugs and fitting aids for use in setting up a signal generator and which are specific to the cylinder and primary detector type are also available.
